Tulle is maybe the most unexpected trend for spring/summer 2017. To my dismay, this does not mean I can whip out my dress with a huge, rainbow tulle skirt that I wore for my 13th birthday party. While that may have to stay in the back of my closet, tulle has been a spotlight on several couture runways.
This fabric is the perfect foundation for ruffles, frills, and flounces. Dior’s show had red, white, and black tulle midi skirts embroidered with plants, insects, and hearts. Saint Laurent had swaths of tulle tucked into a leather corset outfit. Gucci layered tulle in hemlines and puffed-up sleeves. There was even tulle paired with sportswear, slogan sweatshirts, and wide-legged trousers, which shows how tulle can be used in many different ways outside of the traditional box of wedding veils, princess gowns, and ballet tutus.
