The Great Resort 2018

The style of the modern American girl hasn’t really been an archetype used in fashion very often. Yes, overexagerated americana themes, and privileged country club girls have walked the runway time and time again, but the true everyday girl next door style hasn’t really been used as a muse for most designers. At least, not until Emily Current and Merritt Elliott, the geniuses behind clothing label, The Great released their resort collection, featuring relaxed, comfortable clothing we can definately see any American girl wearing.

The main fabrics that were used were flannel, cotton, and a thin, relaxed denim. The focus of this collection seemed to be comfort over style, the silhouettes are very relaxed, and rather simple. There also seems to be no sight of the “athleisure” trend that many designers turn to when looking to do something simple and relaxed, but not lazy. I’m very happy about this, because it shows there are far more choices for those who aren’t huge fans of sportswear in general. The Great opts for worn in tee shirts, straight leg jeans, and other classic pieces instead.

One of the great things about this collection, is the use of neutral colors. The color palette seems to be mostly muted blues, grey, ivory, and navy, with small splashes of pink here and there. I love this because each look is a unique and interesting take on classic american pieces, all of them at least slightly eye catching, but bright colors aren’t what’s catching your eye, it’s the pieces themselves. My favorite piece from this collection happens to be the denim jumper, it’s almost like a mechanic’s jumpsuit in the best way.

The Great is known for it’s fun twists on classic pieces, and reworking them in unexpected ways. I have great respect for this brand because their clothes are simple, easy to wear, and fun without the need to go over the top. Their constant new ideas, and inspired designs are things that keep me anticipating to see what they’re going to do next!
