VMAs: Trend Alert!

The MTV video music awards are always an interesting place to look when it comes to fashion and style. Musicians, models, actors, and internet celebrities all show off fun and innovative looks that you don’t usually get to see at award shows, such as the Oscars or the Grammys. I love seeing all of these stars rock some interesting and innovative styles. I definately noticed some trends popping up on the red carpet, from matching sets to interesting pant-suits on the red carpet!

Many female stars opted for cute matching top and bottom sets. These outfits more relaxed looks that were still fun, feminine, and high fashion. They weren’t the traditional long, beautiful gowns that many celebrities were wearing this year. Chanel West Coast of Rob Dyrdek’s Ridiculousness was stylishly understated in her matching set, designed by Mimi Tran.

Paris Jackson looked ethereal in an embroidered chiffon dress from Dior. I love how she wears a sporty bralette and matching briefs under the dress for a fun mix of styles!

Jasmine Sanders, aka Golden Barbie on Instagram, wears a cute custom handkerchief skirt and top set from Moschino. I love the mix of metallic colors, and the way it almost looks nude against her skin!

Finally Millie Bobby Brown takes a beautiful rodarte top and bottom set, and a pair of pvc booties. The 13 year old Stranger Things star looked so beautiful, but didn’t substitute her personal style to fit with popular trends, which I love!

I saw an interesting trend when looking at the more ultra-glam looks from the VMAs. Some stars were wearing pastel gowns with textured skirts. Kesha looked like a goddess in her Monsoori gown, I loved the blush pink fabric contrasted with the black ribbons holding the sleeves together. The beautiful tiers of fabric added another dimension to the dress, and was far more interesting than a regular gossamer pastel dress. I also loved how the tiers were slightly uneven, keeping up with Kesha’s softer, but still slightly unpolished aesthetic.

Lorde also opted for a softer option, further discarding her dark and edgy aesthetic from her first album era. The thin feathers that cover the skirt not only add an unexpected texture to the dress, but they also ad a beautiful amount of movement to it, that makes everything about her look seem softer, and floatier. L.A. based designer, Monique Lhuillier, designed this dress, and it landed Lorde on almost every VMA best dressed list!

The third trend I noticed was a surprising amount of inventive outfits using pants! A simple pantsuit on the red carpet is old news, many celebrities took it upon themselves to amp up the style and serve interesting looks.  Pink took a traditional three piece men’s pinstripe suit and made it her own with wide-leg pant-legs and adding a large diamond broach and a bunch of silvery earrings. I love the androgyny in this style, and the way she was able to stay true to her punk style, even in a dapper looking suit!

Nicki Minaj mixed her “Harajuku Barbie” beginnings with her newer, sleeker aesthetic in a shiny latex crop top and leggings. What makes this look so special is the skin-tight fabric that’s usually used in fetishist clothing, but in a bright, poppy color. She too added a handful of silver accessories to this outfit, as well as a blonde, and light pink split wig! Nicki has always been a purveyor of ultra-feminine looks with an edge, and this one is a favorite of mine!

Cardi B might be new to the public eye, but she, unlike many new music stars, does not dress in wild, outlandish outfits to get noticed on red carpets. The Bodak Yellow rapper wears a pantsuit that could be mistaken as a dress, but is truly a pair of pants with a cape by Christian Siriano! I love the Madonna influence with the bullet bra cups! Cardi has already proved herself as a style maven, always wearing bold and fashion forward outfits. This one is a bit more mature, yet it’s still eye catching!

The VMAs are where I personally pay more attention to the red carpet looks, because celebrities aren’t afraid to wear things that are a bit more casual and true to their personal style. I love seeing the interesting and creative pieces that stars are wearing, and I’m always on the lookout for trends! This year was a great year in terms of new artists showing off their personal style, and seasoned stars creating new buzz for themselves with show-stopping outfits. I’m already excited for next year!
