You As’ spring 2018 menswear collection was nothing short of a 1960s Technicolor dream. Designer, Tony Liu, who introduced us to his brand a few years ago, used Las Vegas as an inspiration for this collection. Taking both the glamorous, bright, and sparkling aesthetic, and the fun, and kitschy aesthetics the city is known for. This collection featured bright colors, bowling shirts, and Hawaiian prints embellished with glittering Swarovski crystals.
The outfits themselves give off this effortlessly adventurous feeling. An element of skater culture can definately be seen through the long sleeve tee shirts and denim jackets and loose shorts. Liu also mentions that the black mechanic’s jumpsuit was inspired by Sammy Davis Jr.’s disguise in the classic 1960s movie, Oceans 11. However, Liu took the inconspicuous work wear and added hundreds of thousands of crystals, making it the stand-out piece of this collection. While stylish and fun, the collection has a sense of history about it.
Tony Liu has expressed that he wants to find a balance between commerce and creativity, meaning a balance between creating things that could be risky, and unheard of in fashion at the moment, but also has the potential to sell easily. I believe he definately achieved that balance with this collection. It’s extremely current, with the use of athleisure wear seen in the tracksuits, and skater inspired styles sported in the collection, but also has an interesting take on older trends of the past, such as mechanic jumpsuits and hawaiian print. We truly can’t wait to see more of You As, because it’s a brand that definately provides all of us with a breath of fresh air!
