You’ve spent the summer getting your hair messy at the beach, soaking it in chlorine-filled pools, and throwing it in sweaty updos. Now it’s time to show it some love. Fall’s less humid temperatures means you can finally let your hair down and shine, and what better way than to debut a new look?
Switching your hair routine from Summer to Fall can take several steps, according to professional hairstylist and Glamsquad Artistic Director, Giovanni Vaccaro. “When seasons change, your scalp is more prone to drying out,” he says. “Make sure you incorporate scalp treatments and hair treatments.” He suggests Living Proof’s Restore Dry Scalp Treatment before you shampoo, Glamsquad’s own Re-treat Hair Treatment (“a lighter but really moisturizing treatment”) and Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Hair Mask for thicker hair (“super rich and will leave your strands feeling hydrated”).
If you’ve suffered from sun damage—brittle strands, faded hair color—Vaccaro says you can eliminate brassy tones by using Kerastase’s Blond Absolut Hair Mask. He also suggests shampooing less. “Use a dry shampoo instead to stretch out your style,” he says. “No sulfates please. Throw away anything with sulfates and use clean shampoos and conditioners instead. I am a big Fan of Honest Beauty’s shampoos.”
Finally, Vaccaro says as you’re switching your hairstyle, think about updating your toolkit too. “I hear from so many clients that they’ve had the same curling or flat iron for years and it’s covered in hairspray. Your waves and curls will only be as good as the tools you’re using,” he says. “I love Babyliss curling irons or GHD. When it comes to flat irons, get yourself a mini if you have curly roots. You’ll thank me later.”
Now that you’ve got all his pro tips, read on for what new hair looks he predicts will be trending this Fall.
1. Retro Glam
Seen on: Sophie Turner, Jessica Chastain, Winnie Harlow
Why it’s great: “Timeless and chic, this style is going to explode in the fall,” Vaccaro predicts. “I love how glossy and detailed this trend is.” He suggests trying the Old Hollywood-style waves with some hair accessories.
How to get the look: Start with a deep side part and blowdry the hair, then use a setting spray on each section—his pick is the Kerastase Laque Dentelle Spray. Next, use a 3/4 inch curling iron like this one from Hot Tools Professional and wrap hair around while twisting it. “This will give you the slight S-wave shape that makes it feel more retro,” he says. “Pin the indent of your wave down with flat clips to accentuate them even more.” Finally, brush the style out and tease if needed, finish it off with Glamsquad’s Take Hold Flexible Hairspray for shine.
2. Twisted Bun
Seen on: Vaccaro’s Instagram, Kate Bosworth, Brandon Maxwell’s Fall 2019 show
Why it’s great: “With a little effort and creativity you can make the basic bun look not so basic,” says Vaccaro. “I love how you can create any shape and size. These buns typically get tons of attention.”
How to get the look: “Use an elastic bungee to secure your ponytail in place. For added shine, use Glamsquad’s Essentially Hair Oil in your tail. Grab sections of hair and twist them onto themselves and secure them with hair pins. Use a strong hold hairspray, like Bumble and Bumble’s Strong Finish to keep hair in place.”
3. Blunt Bob
Seen on: Ashley Graham, Yvonne Orji, Duckie Thot
Why it’s great: Vaccaro calls this “truly the best and fiercest haircut to make a statement post summer and pre-fall.” He adds, “It also feels so good to get all of those summertime dead ends off your head.”
How to get the look: Consult with a trusted hairstylist on what bob length will work best for your facial structure and hair texture. “Also, keep in mind that going shorter doesn’t necessarily mean more maintenance. It actually should mean less work and effort,” Vaccaro says. “With resurgence of hair accessories, bobs have now become one of the most versatile styles”
4. Crimped Hair
Seen on: 3.1 Philip Lim Fall 2019 runway show, Kim Kardashian, Kristin Cavallari
Why it’s great: “Whoever said crimps would never come back was so wrong!” Vaccaro says. “A big hit on the runways, this look is editorial, edgy, and carefree.”
How to get the look: The hair stylist suggests using a crimper—his favorites are by Hot Tools and Sam Villa—and taking the iron to one-inch sections of hair for a second, then working your way down. There’s also a tool-free way to do this: “You can create three- strand braids all over your head and flat iron them. Once removed, you’ll see a softer crimped wave.” Finish with a texturizing spray.
5. Low Ponytail
Seen on: Christian Siriano Fall 2019 runway show, Vaccaro’s Instagram, Camila Cabello
Why it’s great: “While a classic look, this style was a fan favorite during NYFW Fall/Winter 2019 and this years’ red carpet glam,” Vaccaro says. “I love how chic, sophisticated, and pretty this look is. Have fun with it by keeping it sleek or creating a fluffy, textured tail.”
How to get the look: Styling products are key—Vaccaro suggests using Glamsquad’s Iconic Blowout Lotion to smooth out roots, then blowing them back with a large round brush (his pick is the Ibiza corkscrew brush). “Gather your hair about half an inch above your neck’s hairline and create a pony. If you have super thick hair, use a bungee elastic with hooks on the ends. Take a small section of hair and wrap it around the elastic and secure it with a pin.
6. Giant Volume
Seen on: Moschino Fall 2019 runway, Ciara
Why it’s great: “This is one of my favorite trends for fall,” Vaccaro says—he’s extra fond of it thanks to his growing up in the ’80s.”This texture speaks volumes (no pun intended) and works best with extensions to give you that extra lift you’ve been praying for,” he says.
How to get the look: A texturizing spray is your best friend. Use it after blow drying from mid shaft to ends while flipping your hair over. “Once you flip it back, spray R+ Co Dry Volume Spray on your roots to blow then up like a balloon,” he adds.
