Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Everywhere. Here’s What’s Driving the Boom

From affordability to innovation, lab-grown diamonds are reshaping fine jewelry as we know it

Lab-grown diamonds are no longer a niche alternative — they’re fast becoming the go-to choice for modern jewelry buyers. Once misunderstood or overlooked, these diamonds are now embraced for their look, innovation and value, marking a major shift in how consumers think about fine jewelry. From everyday earrings and necklaces to engagement rings, these ethical stones are catching eyes, popping up all over our feeds and reshaping the fine jewelry landscape.

According to Isa Gehlot, brand representative at Friendly Diamonds, a jewelry company committed to innovation and Earth-kind practices, education has been a major turning point.

“This popularity gain is because the quality and beauty is just as excellent as that of natural diamonds,” Gehlot tells PEOPLE Magazine. “Unlike a decade ago, when the awareness was poor and information scarce, today consumers are smarter and well aware. They seek value and innovation when it comes to higher-quality diamond jewelry without compromise.”

Below is everything you need to know about investing in lab-grown diamond jewelry, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Who Is Buying Lab-Grown Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds appeal to a wide range of consumers, but especially those aged 25-40.

“We have noticed a keen vested interest in the age range of 25-40, the demographics vary from couples getting/or engaged, households with dual-income, as well as first-time fine jewelry buyers,” Gehlot says. “This customer group is quite budget-conscious and refuses to compromise on quality. They gravitate towards lab-grown diamonds as it’s economical, ethical and value-driven.”

These buyers value affordability without sacrificing style or sparkle, whether shopping for a trendy pendant, tennis bracelet or a special gift for a loved one.

Lab-Grown Diamonds vs. Natural Diamonds

A common misconception is that lab-grown diamonds are inferior. But in reality, they are virtually identical in every meaningful way.

“Contrast to what most people would believe, there is no inherent quality difference between the two. Both lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds exist across a range of cut, clarity and carat weight. The quality of any diamond depends on its grading and not the origin of it,” Gehlot emphasizes.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made

Lab-grown diamonds are crafted using cutting-edge technology that replicates natural diamond formation but works much faster.

“Lab-grown diamonds are created using sophisticated and advanced technology that replicates the natural conditions to form a diamond, but in a far more controlled environment,” Gehlot explains.

The two main production methods:

  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): Carbon atoms build up layer by layer around a diamond seed for exceptional clarity and precision.
  • High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT): Mimics natural diamond formation, crystallizing carbon under extreme pressure and heat.

Unlike mined diamonds, lab-grown stones take weeks to months to produce, versus billions of years in the Earth.

Why Lab-Grown Diamonds Are More Affordable

Affordability is one of the biggest reasons for the trend.

“Lab-grown diamonds are more affordable, as the consumer is not overpaying in the name of scarcity or markups,” says Gehlot. Contributing factors also include shorter supply chains, predictable and controlled production, zero mining or exploration costs and stock availability. This allows shoppers to get larger, higher-quality or more unique diamonds without overspending.

Lab-Grown Engagement Rings Are Skyrocketing in Popularity

While lab-grown diamonds are popular across everyday jewelry, they’re also increasingly chosen for engagement rings.

“Personally in the past few years, the spike of people buying lab-grown diamonds over mined diamonds has been evident,” Gehlot shares. “Even people who owned a mined diamond earlier opted for a lab-grown diamond while upgrading their jewelry. A lot of our customers and industry networks have come back telling us that choosing a lab-grown has been satisfactory in terms of desired size, quality, or design.”

For couples, lab-grown diamonds offer a way to get larger, more ethically sourced and beautifully crafted stones without breaking the budget and while still keeping the sparkle and sentimental value of traditional diamonds.

The Future of Lab-Grown Diamonds

From everyday pieces to milestone purchases, lab-grown diamonds are redefining modern fine jewelry. With ethical sourcing, affordability and the same brilliance as mined diamonds, it’s no wonder more consumers are embracing this trend. As production becomes more accessible and demand grows, lab-grown diamonds are shaping the future of jewelry, proof that luxury can be modern, sustainable, and smart.
