This Millennial-Loved Shoe Is Making a Major Comeback This Spring and it’s Chicer Than Ever

If a Euro summer is on the horizon, or you simply want to dress like it is, there’s one shoe that instantly sets the mood: espadrilles. The breezy style feels synonymous with seaside cafés, linen dresses, and long days in the sun. It’s no surprise, then, that the practical silhouette is popping up everywhere again this season. While espadrilles feel perfectly aligned with today’s Mediterranean vacation energy, the shoe actually has much deeper roots. The design dates back to 14th-century Spain, where workers wore the lightweight, jute-soled shoes because they were breathable, comfortable, and easy to produce.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that espadrilles became a true fashion staple. That’s when Yves Saint Laurent introduced the first wedge in collaboration with Spanish shoemakers, transforming the humble silhouette into a summer fashion icon. Since then, the style has ebbed and flowed through trend cycles, though some versions have remained constant (shoutout to the beloved Chanel espadrille for holding it down for all these years!). Now the shoe is having another moment thanks to the broader “Euro summer” fantasy and fashion’s ongoing nostalgia cycle. Which leaves the question: should I add this style to my summer staples?

Given the recent ballet flat revival, it’s no surprise that spring and summer will bring about an espadrille renaissance. “Over the years, I’ve had many pairs from brands like Castañer, Tory Burch, and Boden that became central to my wardrobe,” says Bella Gerard Fayne, a New York-based fashion editor and content creator. “Especially in Manhattan, where I don’t love to style open-toed sandals for summer, there’s something about an espadrille that perfectly completes every look. My go-to is to style them with a ladylike midi skirt, but I love them just as much with lightweight denim. They also look great with more bohemian styles like bloomer pants, another big trend for the season.”

Ahead, discover seven ways to style the millennial-era classic as it makes its summer comeback.

With a Maxi Skirt

You could argue that almost anything looks good with a maxi skirt, but an espadrille heel instantly gives the outfit a coastal feel. The cross-tie detail not only adds a bit of security when walking, but the extra height also complements the longer hemline of a maxi skirt. Here, a guest keeps things monochrome on top and finishes the look with black espadrille wedges.

With a Matching Set

When in doubt, go matchy-matchy. Flat espadrilles pair beautifully with wide-leg pants, and a coordinated set instantly elevates the look. This outfit easily transitions from the beach to brunch to casual summer days at the office. Altogether, it reads breathable, relaxed, and effortlessly polished.

With Straight-Leg Denim

Cigarette jeans, otherwise known as straight-leg jeans, are so back. After years of Gen Z-favorite baggy styles dominating, fashion insiders are mixing slimmer silhouettes back into the rotation. To keep things feeling streamlined (and totally boho-chic), style them with a blazer jacket, shoulder bag, and classic sunglasses.

Print Maxxing

Clashing prints is one of fashion’s most reliable styling tricks. Spotted across street style scenes in every fashion capitol, the bold combination feels especially fresh when paired espadrilles. Add a roomy beach tote, and you’re instantly ready for your coastal moment.

With Shorts

Whether bermudas, cutoffs, or longer hems are your forte, great news: espadrilles look great with all three. Exposed ankles not only put the shoes in the spotlight but also keep you cool. Here, a guest simply pairs her gladiator-style with a tonal blazer and a colorful bag for a pop.

With a Flowy Dress

Paris Hilton knows a thing or two about a standout summer look, and this sundress with espadrille heels combination proves it. One of the most feminine pairings of the bunch, it’s also undeniably practical for warm-weather days. The result feels easy, breezy, and perfect for getting the ultimate summer IG shot.

With Trousers

Did someone say office-ready? Pairing espadrille flats with your favorite trousers can take you from the office to the boardwalk in no time. Add a blazer on top for a professional look, or swap in a breezy button-down for beach-ready vibes. Versatile, flowy, and chic–what more could you really need this summer?
